CountryUnited States
LocationScottsdale, AZ

Matthews is seeking a Vice President of Engineering to lead and scale our software development organization as technology becomes an increasingly critical driver of our commercial real estate business.

This role is equal parts engineering leadership, organizational stewardship, and execution accountability. The ideal candidate brings deep experience managing software engineers and delivery teams, strong fluency in modern software development practices, and enough hands-on technical background to credibly advise architects and engineers—and, when needed, contribute directly to the codebase.

While technical proficiency is important, the VP of Engineering’s primary focus is building and sustaining high-performing teams, ensuring delivery predictability, and providing clear, transparent reporting of engineering health and outcomes to senior leadership.

This role is based at our Scottsdale, AZ office. Please note that we do not currently have the capability to provide visa sponsorships of any kind.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineering managers, senior engineers, and cross-functional development teams
  • Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, psychological safety, and continuous improvement
  • Monitor team health, capacity, morale, and sustainability, proactively addressing risks such as burnout, skill gaps, or delivery bottlenecks
  • Partner with Product, Data, and Business leaders to ensure engineering efforts align with strategic priorities

Technical Oversight & Architecture

  • Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance across the engineering organization
  • Review designs and implementations to ensure scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to architects and senior engineers
  • Maintain sufficient hands-on proficiency to:
    • Understand system tradeoffs
    • Review code and technical designs
    • Occasionally contribute code when it meaningfully accelerates delivery or unblocks teams (not as a primary responsibility)

Delivery, Accountability & Agile Practices

  • Own engineering execution and delivery outcomes across multiple teams
  • Establish and reinforce effective agile practices (Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid approaches) that balance predictability with flexibility
  • Ensure commitments, forecasts, and delivery risks are clearly communicated and managed
  • Hold teams accountable for outcomes while maintaining a blameless, learning-oriented culture

Metrics, Reporting & Executive Communication

  • Define, track, and communicate engineering KPIs and health metrics (e.g., delivery predictability, throughput, quality, reliability, team health)
  • Provide clear, data-informed updates to senior management on progress, risks, and tradeoffs
  • Translate technical realities into business-relevant insights for non-technical stakeholders
  • Establish transparency around delivery performance without resorting to micromanagement or vanity metrics

Process, Quality & Operational Excellence

  • Continuously assess and improve engineering processes, tooling, and workflows
  • Ensure high standards for code quality, testing, security, and operational reliability
  • Support incident response, postmortems, and long-term reliability improvements as needed
  • Balance speed of delivery with long-term maintainability and platform health

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience, including significant hands-on engineering work
  • 5+ years of experience managing software engineers and/or engineering managers
  • Proven experience leading multiple development teams and complex software initiatives
  • Strong understanding of modern software architecture, cloud platforms, APIs, and data-driven systems
  • Deep familiarity with agile methodologies and iterative delivery practices
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to senior, non-technical stakeholders
  • Track record of building, scaling, and retaining high-performing engineering teams

Preferred Extras:

  • Background managing developers in a mid-enterprise environment ($50m-1b revenue), particularly delivering SaaS product
  • Familiarity with engineering metrics frameworks (e.g., DORA, flow metrics, team health indicators)
  • Experience partnering closely with product management and business leadership
  • Prior experience reporting to or working directly with executive leadership
  • Golang in production systems
  • Kubernetes and container orchestration
  • Terraform and cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
  • Experience as a Site Reliability Engineer
  • Open-source contributions
  • Code generation frameworks
  • GraphQL schema design
  • Linux internals and CLI tooling
  • Experience with LLMs, LangChain/LangGraph, and vector databases

What Success Looks Like:

  • Engineering teams are productive, engaged, and sustainable
  • Delivery is predictable, transparent, and aligned with business priorities
  • Senior leadership has clear visibility into engineering health, progress, and risks
  • Technical decisions balance speed, quality, and long-term platform viability
  • Engineering is viewed as a strategic partner, not just a delivery function

Salary Range – $200-240k depending on capability and industry experience
